Those of us who are harshly and reluctantly entrapped in the system of political control undertaken by our elected government -- through its employment of modern surveillance techniques and technologies --often try to escape from its ensnaring and suffocating restrictions by thinking in terms of fighting the authorities through legal means -- namely, by employing, certainly foolishly, the official services of our compromised and beholden Members of Parliament (elected lawmakers), and by making use of the professional services of our timid and equally compromised lawyers (trained specifically to understand the intricacies -- and also vulnerabilities -- of governmental actions responding to, and confronting the challenges and criticisms posed by opponents and critics of the government, with reference to universal principles of human rights and to international laws and regulations guiding precisely such governmental actions and behaviour).

Such official methods of legal recourse, admittedly, may prevent some of the worst excesses of a surveillance society, but such solutions also DO NOT WORK if THE POLITICAL WILL TO IMPLEMENT SUCH SOLUTIONS -- EFFECTIVELY AND NOT JUST COSMETICALLY -- IS NOT PRESENT.

Without detailed public knowledge of surveillance techniques and technologies, and of the EXTENT to which they are being deployed, the groundswell of public opinion necessary to drive a DEMAND for such solutions will remain lacking.

The main concern of dissident bloggers like me, who write outside of the intellectual and political (and "systematic") confines set by mainstream snoopers and manipulators of targetted victims in our surveillance society here, is to learn as much as we can about (and to reveal bravely and publicly about the results of such learning) the AMOUNT and EXTENT of data (not data collection itself) that are being collected by the authorities and their COLLATION within ever-more-massive databases!

Question: What are the safeguards (will they be observed and followed in the first place?), should our society ever demand them, to ensure privacy principles are respected and to allay other important privacy concerns? Thus, citizens who are dissident bloggers like me, have a real concern, and it is about widespread INSTITUTIONAL surveillance of individuals and/or groups in a society!

Such massive surveillance efforts by the government is the result of The Party's desire to collate and form national databases -- and this is extremely disturbing.

The system of "due process of law" is long embodied in the laws of the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada (and in the systems of jurisprudence derived from them). Such a system is relied upon by most citizen-victims of governmental surveillance to protest against such humiliating and oppressive forms of control over their lives -- including their moments of privacy.

That is the reason why non-mainstream bloggers and political critics resort to other (shall we say, un-systematic?) forms or methods of countering the restrictive or constraining influences from the ubiquitous surveillance officers who, normally, with an unknowing, unknowledgeable and unaware -- and hence supine and acquiescent -- citizenry at their feet, will exploit their advantages (in terms of logistics, finances, and knowledge and information -- based precisely on the formation of national databases, etc.) and also their awesome, comprehensive legal and juridical powers, to subjugate and suppress the controlled population (although they would never admit to doing so openly!).

Dissident bloggers like me have this part of a bigger picture of covert control over the population by stealthy and manipulative surveillance officers in mind when we blog or write about corporate or governmental snooping and manipulation (which are never discussed or covered here -- and also never denied either -- by journalists, editors and commentators in the obsequious local mass media).

As Mark Weiser, Chief Technologist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre (PARC), said (in 1991), on the danger of an ubiquitous technological environment:

"The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it."

I had foolishly gone AWOL from my company, based at Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute, where I was undergoing three months of infantry Section Leader training, sometime in early 1972. After a few days of wandering about, I returned to camp eventually and was quickly warded at the Medical Centre in SAFTI for observation.

I was an unobtrusive and quiet patient in the ward, while undergoing daily medical examination by the medical doctors there and also by the psychiatrists at a Government clinic at Maxwell Road, where I was referred to for specialist observation.

During the time I was resting as a patient in the Medical Centre, something serious and grave -- oh, Heavens! -- happened to me, which was to set the course of my future from then onwards. But what exactly did take place there and then?

This is a question of major importance to my life now and it has serious implications for my future as a writer. I've been waiting, since 1972, for this moment of truth-telling! This revelation of my actual status as a man, human being, citizen and writer -- with its purported role of an "implantee" (or agent or employee of the Singapore Government) will illuminate the rest of my life -- and allow me to see clearly ahead, on my road to professional success as a writer -- in Singapore, no less!

I will launch attack after attack -- against the Singapore Government for damaging my life -- with, especially, regard to my sexual needs -- and I will hold them responsible for any failure of mine now as a man trying to live out a normal life for the rest of my existence on this earth.

All I know is that I can remember many events, episodes and activities that I have had experienced during the last 36 years of my life -- as a "schizophrenic", a "molester", a "thief", a "violent" or "aggressive" man, a "PAP agent", a production worker, a low-level and humble clerk, a "mole", a "spy" -- yes, in other words, as a "government employee" acting in all these roles, guises and capacities which are all totally unsuited to my character, my personality, my values and principles, and my goals and real interests as a man, human being, citizen and aspiring writer!

The time for continuing to launch my anti-government sarcastic responses remains! My memory tells me if I am to embark on a serious and purposeful future course of action, I must attack the Singapore Government from now onwards. And I have been trying my best to do so -- except, on certain occasions, when, for some clear reasons -- moments of idiocy and imbecility -- under uninvited provocation!

I want to stress the gravity of the Singapore Government's mistake in "implanting" me, unofficially and without my consent or permission, in 1972 -- an act which was to result, for many years now, in its constant and conscious attempt and and effort -- by using the instruments of ministerial and state powers (the government,law, the police, etc.) to undermine my eventual (contemplated) success as a serious, quality writer unde (of published books -- and essays in important magazines)!

Today is the day for the Singapore Government to recognize and acknowledge, as the lawfully but unfairly elected rulers of Singapore, the upmost severity of my problematic situation. I have to regard myself as a case of Human Rights Abuses by the Singapore Government -- should this elected Democratic Government in Singapore fail to grant me my right to work as a professional writer.

I am not out to fix the government of Singapore -- no, not in any sense of the word. I am honestly trying to resolve my extremely difficult problem and my complicated present situation. Nobody up to now understands my problem, my situation, my predicament, my plight -- including my own cherished family members!

The choice is clear: Either the Singapore Government acts decisively on this vital matter of mine or it will have to answer to History.


Addendum:

All my revelations and exposure about surveillance officers and their activities are not aimed at undermining the Singapore Government's clear understanding of the issue at hand. I just want to EXPRESS myself -- my awareness, my knowledge, my knowingness -- after, especially, being for so long almost totally ignorant of what is crucially going on or taking place -- as a life-changing and life-affecting vital issue -- in this small country of my own and in the larger world too!

Let me declare that I regard the Singapore Government as entirely responsible for any failure of mine to work as a published professional writer (and to live with dignity and self-respect) -- and for any supposedly accummulated "debt" (of whatever kind) which it owed me (and for whose payment it has yet to make concretely and practically, in no uncertain or miniscule terms)! Does it still insist that it does not have any debt -- of whatever kind -- which it still owes me? [Had I not lost, missed, wasted and sacrificed so much? And had I not earned anything at all -- not even some monetary remuneration and even compensation, yes! -- for all my intellectual, moral, artistic and even physical efforts during these past 36 years of living as a reluctant and, sometimes, unhappy "implantee"? I just don't want to work, whether officially or unofficially, secretly or otherwise (except for a brief period at MSD in the days of long ago!), as a member of the governmental surveillance authorities -- be it as an intelligence or security officer or in any capacity or role. I am just INCOMPATIBLE with Government service!]

This is what is TROUBLING and PUZZLING to me -- as a rational man with some compassion of no small measure: How could anyone force me to work in any capacity or role or guise that I have absolutely neither the interest nor the qualities or the abilities to perform in -- to my own satisfaction and self-respect?

And I'm not going to join a political party just to reward the loyalty of activists -- former or current ones! I do want to serve the people, but only as a writer and not a a practising politician! But firstly, I must, after all these hopeless and miserable years, serve myself -- yes!, my own needs and goals!

I believe a great number of Singa0poreans are suffering from a disaffected relationship with and attitude towards the Singapore government! Andf they mustbe, this coming General Election, allowed tom express such disaffection at the ballot box. This is a cornerstone of true and genuine -- not cosmetic -- democracy! (And certainly, I am not going to be in politics to enrich myself or to exercise autocratic powers!) And I don't believe in Western conspiracies! Some leaders aremore interested in, or concerned with, Western bullying -- in the form of conspiracies, for instance, which they claim these Western powers are (or which they accuse them of) trying to use to undermine their positions in the political and social order (or themselves!) -- than in how they TREAT their OWN PEOPLE!

That grave mistake in "implanting" me was not accidental. I am very sure of that! It was a deliberate and calculated attempt to exploit my weaknesses and defects in order to serve an outcome which all members of the top brass in SAFTI at that time were keen to establish in their lives and which was based on a decision undertaken by the military top brass with such unforgivable lightness of consideration and with such unbearable lack of awareness of its severe implications to my own life and future -- should the outcome ever turn into a disastrous mishandling of my case and an unpardonable mistreatment of myself as a medical patient warded at a medical centre for simple medical observation and perhaps even professional treatment by qualified medical practitioners -- yes, for an admittedly rash and foolish act which, nonetheless, merely expressed my youthful idealism and naivete in those days.

But why, oh why? And why the cover-up all these years?

Was there ever such an example of total INEPTITUDE by members of what is publicly promoted and claimed as a supposedly "good" and "able" government? And are they really and truly interested in a GENUINE transfer of power -- and not in a cosmetic one? Is it going to be an admirable exercise in statesmanship? OR IS IT JUST A MATTER OF SIMPLY LOSING TOTAL CONTROL? WILL THE TRANSFER RESULT IN INCESTUOUS PARTITIONS OR DIVISIONS --AND THEN IN SHAMBLES? TRULY, IT WILL BE AN IGNOMINOUS END TO SO MANY YEARS OF "HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL" RULE -- ALBEIT A RULE BASED MOSTLY ON BLUFF! -- AND ALSO DAMN INSULTING THREATS AND TYPICALLY ABUSIVE AND CRUEL ACTIONS!

WOULD IT BE -- ASSUMING IT IS GOING TO BE A REALITY! -- A TIMELY (AND HENCE ORDERLY) TRANSFER OF POWER? Yes, instead of presenting and identifying themselves -- seriously, openly and clearly -- in order to respectfully and honestly make their own intentions known, and to express their own needs and desires, these surveillance officers (both male and female, whether separately and individually or as a combined unit), just contribute to my perturbation as a man, human being, citizen and writer!

Yes, these human monitors, censors, spies, agents, snoopers and controllers -- with the help of the latest and the most advanced scientific equipment and technological inventions and electronic/electrical products -- have been, day-in and day-out, second-after-second, minute-after-minute, hour-after-hour, day-after-day, week-after-week, month-after-month, year-afer-year, WORKING (real hard indeed!) to disturb me!

They have been insulting me -- my intelligence and my respect for myself; they have been controlling me -- to hide their own inadequacies and hang-ups. They have been expressing their grievances and complaints; they have been humiliating me -- while I am taking a shower, changing clothes, urinating, shitting, masturbating, and fucking women (and there were, and will still be, plenty of such women in my life as a resistant and dissident citizen)! They have been issuing "challenges" to me, knowingly or not; they have been pretending to be what they are not (and never will be!); they want to impress upon me that they are likely "winners", that they can achieve victories (moral?, intellectual?, what else?), that they can obtain "permanent" (sexual, especially) satisfasction, enjoyment, pleasure and success!

These surveillance officers (men and women) want to please themselves (in so many different ways that are -- secretively or not -- best known only to themselves); they want to react or to respond (to my expressions and self-expressions); yes, they want to ejaculate (how many times per week?); to avenge their "sufferings" (caused by me?) -- by making me suffer in turn. They want to avenge Lee Kuan Yew's humiliation under my deliberate, insulting and provocative verbal dismissiveness; and to avenge themselves on me -- their long-time (but long-suffering) nemesis! They want to punish me for daring to insult their modesty, saintliness, prudery, prudishness, holiness, religiousity, purity, perfection, infallibility, uprightness, goodness, ability and everything worth their while to mention (in support of their "feel-good" factor: yes, to feel "good", "able", etc., etc., etc.).

But, dear fellow citizens and readers, these surveillance officers NEVER want to admit to their own mistakes; they NEVER want to -- thus and accordingly -- CORRECT or REMEDY their own grave mistakes!

Instead, they choose to EXPLOIT such mistakes of theirs -- committed from the highest level of governmental authority to the lowest level of official subordination -- and turn them to their own advantage (and to gain farther advantages of whatever kinds) -- ALL IN THEIR OWN FAVOUR!

Finally, a word of reminder to these conformists who lack (STRONG) minds of their own: How can they continue to insult me, repeatedly -- and to "take me on" in things or subjects which I CAN commandeer? (and, further, in areas where I am the absolute and undeniable MASTER and COMMANDER -- the COMMANDANT, in effect?)!

I am a self-confident blogger, dissident, writer, manly lover, and, unarguably, a unique and original human being. I, namely: David Chua Chuan Seah, can never be "helped" to "enjoy" myself by these surveillance officers when their only motive for such "help" is to APPEASE their own guilt-ridden complex! For, as a writer, I must be asked (and be FULLY respected for my sincere and honest reply) : What are my own intentions? Are they noble and magnanimous? Or debased, degrading and abusive?

AND THIS IS MY REPLY : It is time for these surveillance officers to find out whether or not I am a liar (a pathological one?), a "mental defective", a "psychopath", or ... (what else?, you idiots!).

This is my request: Do not exploit my weaknesses (e.g. for women and girls), including my soft-heartedness, my obsession with good hygiene, comfort, my meticulousness, my confidence, my resourcefulness, my urge to get close to women and girls (again!, but why not? : what, really or exactly, can I do, Sir?).

Please do not take advantage of my ignorance about many scientific facts, matters, inventions and technological advances -- whose knowledge or awareness of many people simply take for granted.

Please do not exploit my "stubborness"; please do not abuse my humility. Please do not corrupt and contaminate my precious thoughts (which are many indeed!) and also my few, perhaps too few indeed -- but nonetheless sensitive (sometimes very much so !) feelings!

In Singapore, massive surveillance efforts, practices, planning and activities carried out by the MSD/ISD officers have replaced almost all forms of police enforcement work!

A man surely needs a WILLING maid -- for the satisfaction of his sexual NEEDS and social WANTS. Why, then, are the MSD/ISD officers preventing me from satisfying my sexual NEEDS and social WANTS by stopping me from meeting AND PHYSICALLY CONTACTING women who are NOT prostitutes?

Do MSD/ISD officers hold that a man is guilty until proven innocent? Why do they, for instance, assume that I am guilty of "immoral" behaviour (MOSTLY by patronizing prostitutes?!) without having ever proved that I am indeed so? AND on what grounds, may I ask precisely, am I "immoral"?

MSD and ISD officers have breached principles of privacy which are lawfully protected elsewhere in the world.

What is "surveillance" but another name for spying? To watch individuals covertly, to film them, to listen in to their conversations or communications, to know where they are at any given moment, to amass data on every aspect of their lifestyles -- this, surely, is precisely what a spy is paid to do! And this is exactly what our government and large corporations are doing, and attempting to do, to every individual in this nation!

However, it is worth contemplating a single question: What is the difference between "surveillance" and "spying"?

In Singapore, all Internet Service Providers are operated by government-controlled or related organizations;

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home, or correspondence, nor to unlawful attacks on his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

But now, there is a new begining, at this early stage in the 21st Century, for the United States and the world : racism, class-based politics and unilateralism have been happily defeated in the U.S. for the first time!

It was a momentous occasion in the U.S. for many proud, loyal and confident Americans of diverse political beliefs. With their different respective definitions and, understandably, often mutually opposing concepts, of "democracy", Americans are totally free to cast their votes, absolutely unhindered, for any candidate that they choose to support. On Election Day (4.11.2008), the glory and magnificence of American democracy was eagerly observed by leaders and citizens from all over the world. Not unexpectedly, there was to be no surprise for the carefully and intelligently observing followers of the latest news reports provided by the media on the General Election -- based on results of initial polls.

It turned into a historical victory for democracy -- and for Senator Barack Obama -- on the next day (5.11.2008), when the final results were known and announced to the whole world. Yes, Mr Obama is the first Afro-American Democrat to be voted by millions and millions of Americans (from both sides of the political divide) into power in the U.S.! (Thanks, Americans! God bless America!)

As the most important and influential new/next man in the White House, President-elect Barack Obama, a progressive/liberal political leader, will be gracefully and peacefully inaugurated at noon on a bright day on 20.1.09 -- as the 44th President of the United States of America!

People, not only in America, but also all over the world, are full of positive feelings and high expectations after Mr Obama's break-through victory -- and also, just as important, after the high gains made by the Democrats in the U.S. Senate.

President-elect Barack Obama is wise, charismatic, strong, thoughtful and -- for the first time in a long, long while -- genuinely full of goodwill towards all men and women, regardless of nationality, race, language, religion, gender and other related or key differences among humankind.
In particular, Mr. Barack Obama's working-class-hero background inspires many people. All it takes is for someone like Obama -- a leader whom many Americans has placed their trust in -- to enhance their life and to improve their lives.

But after the euphoria is over, a sharp sense of reality will set in: the U.S. economy is still in a mess -- a sad conservative legacy from the current leader George Bush. The date 5.11.2008 may be a time for U.S. citizens to remember -- as a time for substantial and real change (especially in the continuing struggle for human rights) -- but no political system (not even the well-established and highly-influential one in the U.S.) can change and improve the life and lifestyle of the voters (both inside the U.S. and in the entire world) in an effective, innovative and creative way -- unless there are leaders who inspire hope with their progressive policies, domestically and in foreign relations.

There will first be a transition period of 77 days (11 weeks) for U.S. President George Bush to graciously and smoothly (and perhaps gratefully?) hand over the American leadership to his new/next successor Barack Obama -- a period in which many fine points of political contentions and contentiousness will be expectedly thrashed out and discussed seriously at the highest level of political discourse. For instance, they should help each other to find a hopefully conclusive and, perhaps, possibly -- idealistically? -- non-violent solution to the difficult problem of getting out of Iraq and, instead, of staying on in Afghanistan -- in the continuing fight against genuine and real -- and not manufactured or concocted -- terrorism (conducted by, especially, religious extremists)!

And when President-elect Barack Obama eventually assumes the official role as the leader, not only of the U.S. but also of the world, he would still have to face the problems posed by threats to fundamental freedoms and rights belonging to citizens in the U.S. and to all those helpless victimized people all over the world. Mr Obama, with all his undeniable qualities, skills, experiences and knowledge, will still need a lot of luck to prove his ability as an effective, responsible and competent (especially economically) leader of the U.S. -- the Mother of Democracy.

Mr Obama, from my personal perspective and understanding of current political and economic issues, must be emphatically pro-freedom, pro-equality, pro-creativity, pro-inspiration and, most important of all, decidedly and decisively anti-dishonesty!

In foreign policies, as an Afro-American, he would be expectedly pro-Africa. And Africans need such a man, human being and American political leader like him!

Martin Luther King, Jr., the great Afro-American leader and intense champion of human and civil rights, was a perseverant political activist who dared to dream openly and publicly -- of freedom, equality and peace for all mankind. But he was not the only one then -- and he inspired the only one among Afro-Americans now who can effect political change, creatively and innovatively, in the U.S. (and in other democracies of the world).

May future President Obama intelligently and carefully delegate his authority and power to those among his subordinates and supporters -- the senators and congressmen, the appointed officials and paid civil servants, and other lower-ranking officers who are inspired and motivated enough by Obama's leadership qualities -- so that they can serve as strong bridges to link up strongly all the people of the world, beyond the constraints of blood ties, racial origins, country of residence, political or religious beliefs -- and be they winners or losers in the game of life -- and allow them, freely, autonomously and independently, to journey, each and everyone of them, in his or her own way, on his or her respective path, to the common destination of FREEDOM, GROWTH and PEACE for ALL!

There are many amongst us in this world who cry out -- openly and actively, or silently and privately (in this conflict-laden world of postmodernism and globalization, and of human greed and ineptitude displayed by covert surveillance authorities in governments all over the world) -- and this is not a secret at all! -- against the oppression, suppression and repression by many so-called realistic, pragmatic, Machiavellian and, surprisingly (!), "democratic" governments and regimes in the world.

Let us then dare to change -- by first dreaming! Now!

A Thinking Senior Citizen In A New World

Of Electronic Surveillance, Postmodernism and Globalization -- In The Life of Singaporeans

I'm getting poorer and poorer in my finances. But I'm becoming richer and richer in my mind. As my recent and latest blog entries/posts have shown, I'm also acquiring more and more power in my writing! In my love/sex/social life, I've achieved greater potency in my fucking of women. Yes, I'm more and more in almost complete control of my own life -- as a man, human being, citizen and writer/blogger! I'm in ascendancy!

And why am I in such a glorious state of mind, heart, soul and body? Well, it is simple: I'm becoming more and more well-informed and knowledgeable -- about the new world of electronic surveillance (especially in regard to politics, sports and education), postmodernism (especially in regard to literature and the arts), and globalization (in regard to trade, finance and commerce) -- with a clear and wide-ranging intellectual framework and reference to authoritarian and autocratic governments (like Singapore's)!

I now know more and more about postmodernist use of surveillance technologies -- and its application to, and influence on, the latest developments in the study of history, philosophy, literature; and in academic scholarship, scientific research, psychological studies, political practices, sexual relations, parenting, and yes, the writing (or authorship) of BOOKS!

Yes, the whole population of Singapore -- a global city -- is under electronic surveillance by the authorities (corporate and governmental)! We are all interconnected with one another -- poor, rich, not-too-poor and not-too-rich -- by the PAP Government's use of electronic surveillance technologies and techniques!

This is not a flippant, trivial, superficial and inconsequential article to put the Singapore Government in a bad light by offering supposedly "unobjective" comments and "twisted" or "distorted" facts! The PAP Government has to prove such an intentiion on my part in the first place. Facts are free -- if you seek them out conscientiously and intelligently; but my opinions and reflections are sacred. And I'm not just trying to promote serious, quality reading!

As an individualistic oppositionist and writer, who finds many aspects of our cosmopolitan city -- with its world-class companies and the best talents around, engaging in postmodernist, globalized and electronic surveillance activities, practices, methods, behaviour and lifestyles -- very unacceptable. I'm unapologetically defiant and totally "unorthodox" in my persistent exposure and scrutiny of such disturbing manifestations of UNEQUAL POWER RELATIONSHIPS between corporations and the government on the one side and the helpless, poor and unfortunate citizen-victims on the other side. I'm certainly justified in having such anti-PAP and anti-LKY (and hence, pro-opposition) attitudes! I'm, after all, a progressive VOICE of REASON! And I will scrutinize and expose in the name of FREEDOM -- man's most important and perhaps greatest idea!

I cannot remain silent and neutral. I know too much already. I must speak up and out -- and even scream and shout, if necessary! I'll pilot my little airplane, from now on, with a unified, well-rounded and well-balanced vision of the more benign and humane new world that is to come in the future -- if we keep believing in, and fight for, the TRUTH!

These cunning and manipulative surveillance officers, pretending to "help" me, finally (after 36 years of victimization and manipulation by them?), achieve my much-desired success as a writer of published (i.e. printed) books (of collected essays) -- and also as a lover of the females among them in the TOP SECRET control room, are now working on -- well, they keep trying to learn -- how to finally turn me into an absolutely isolated, controlled and brainwashed subject -- as opposed to my current status as an unrepentant critic of the PAP Government (and especially, of LKY)!

Their "productive" efforts, time spent and resources used will all be in vain! I am sure of that!
