Letter To The Prime Minister of Singpore : On The Predictable Official Response To My Application For Financial Assistance

URGENT ATTENTION NEEDED

Re: Top Secret Project, Headed by Former MSD Officer, Mr Tan Hong Huat (with the rank of Captain in 1976; and now, of Retired Colonel, in 2009)

I'm a prisoner of the expectations of the former Military Security Department (MSD), where I once worked at, for about 10 months (between Dec. 1975 and Oct. 1976).

Do they not realize that I'm just as aware of the practical realities of their "scenario thinking" -- as they themselves are, controlling me, an ex-MSD clerical officer in its Registry -- from the time I left MSD all these past 36 years or so ago?

But I'm not prepared to accept any unfair outcome and consequence of having to conform to the requirements of their -- especially, political "scenario thinking" in practice. I'm not going to be a puppet, a pawn, or a figurehead! I'm also, neither a worshipper nor an idolizer!

Their "scenarios" are often contradictory and paradoxical, don't they realize?

Sir, I'm a realistic man (in spite of my basic idealism) : I, too, am aware of the dilemmas, realities, ambiguities, tensions and uncertainties that lie at the bottom of all our attempts at communicating with one another -- to find a good settlement to our problem --one which resulted from my unwilling implantation in 1972 (an unhappy event whose related details and involved decision-making by those military officers at SAFTI at that time in 1972 and whose decision to implant me have all yet to be EXPLAINED, in full and with clarity, to me in this significant year 2009. What exactly do you mean when you make me (or prompt me to) claim or say that I'm an "implantee"? What is an implantee?

Sir, my whole life from now onwards depends on whether or not I am going to receive detailed information concerning my implantation in 1972 -- which I had never consented to in the first place!

I am not a "both/and" thinker, please! I'm an "either/or" thinker, Sir! I don't accept that "both/and" thinking is the only way to make hard (political) decisions that will lead to the solution of my problem -- which is not merely financial in nature. Sir, you should know!

Please avail me of your insights and wisdom -- honed from years of political leadership. I'll be glad to learn from you.

I apologize for causing you much irritation, hurt, frustration, anger, and immense annoyance with my disparaging and disrespectful remarks and responses to your handling of State affairs and issues -- in my comments posted in my blogs and those in SDP website (namely, and respectively: http://afighterandalovertoo.blogspot.com/ and http://www.yoursdp.org/ ).

But I just don't like pomposity in a person -- especially in a person with an official position with so much unusually (or automatically) -- and speedily -- conferred autocratic POWER over all others -- be they subordinates or the commom people!

And I prefer to confront realities -- not illusions (yes, including "conspiracies", "scenarios" and "crises"), as manufactured and concocted by your hardworking former MSD officers and other related personnel from the Singapore Government! And aren't those just mere propaganda? Oh, the sordidness of opportunist politics -- with all its political maneuvering, harassment, manipulation and manhandling I'm too intelligent and too careful a thinker and observer to let myself be insulted and misled in this infantile manner. On the ground that my own destiny will be taken charge of by "madmen" and "madwomen" who use security and intelligence officers against me (a "barbarian")? It all goes back to the years of LKY, who ran a one-man show -- tooautocratic to allow Cabinet overnment to flourish! Well, LKY is very effective -- especially when it comes to matters of the economy! And he doesn't care about "popularity"!

Please, Sir, don't panic! We have a large mutual database -- your kind, officially, and that of my own version, based on my own intellectual framework and experiences.

Sir, please make use of our mutual knowledge, experiences. and even our imagination to serve as guides to the solution of my (and our) problem -- which requires and demands our collaboration.

We should try to ensure that the possible is not only probable but also achievable!

I WANT (as the lead singer in A ROCK GROUP CALLED "QUEEN" ONCE SANG) TO BE FREE! SIR, ARE YOU LISTENING WITH YOUR HEART, MIND, SOUL AND BODY TO MY HUMBLE AND EVEN DESPERATE PLEA to you for help -- for your intervention in my case, a TOP SECRET PROJECT THAT HAS INVOLVED SO MANY PEOPLE FOR THE LAST 36 YEARS AND INCURRED SO MUCH EXPENSES! (AND PRODUCED SO MUCH PAIN, ANGER, HURT AND SORROW IN SO MANY PEOPLE!)

Let us, Sir, put a FINAL and CONCLUSIVE cover to this open-ended issue, which has been leading me, especially, as a "victimized" and reluctant "government employee" or "agent", for the past 36 years, to a point, my lowest point!, where I could not survive even as a humble but, to put it simply, talented citizen and writer/blogger (a position and point in my life where I have to suffer the humiliation of seeking FINANCIAL assistance from the Singapore Government, who always insists on people being SELF-RELIANT, a quality that I myself subscribe to but which I am unable to practise in reality, for the majority of the past 36 years of my life as an unhappy and reluctant implantee of the OFTEN BARBARIC Singapore Government)!

Sir, please ask the Military Security Department officials and officers (the former ones, namely --with whom I was working between Dec 1975 and Oct 1976) for information and for their coooperation and initiative in our attempt to come to a final understanding/resolution/solution of this thorny problem!

1. We can do what other (unaware and unknowing) activists and politicians can't do here -- specifically, by precisely NOT becoming political figureheads! We just want real, genuine, effective and substantial results -- not mere cosmetic, concocted, manufactured and "in-house" changes!
2. We stand back when we should have intervened, and we intervene when we should NOT! Why the "ineptitude"? (Or "dishonesty"?)
3. We have absolutely NO evidence of our so-called "continual", "continuing", "continuous", "continued", "contagious", "confining" and "comfortable" utilization (or, yes!, USAGE) of the VITAL Internet Services which are provided by STARHUB, the Internet Service Provider!
4. Logically, from one of our leading dissident blogger's (David Chua Chuan Seah's) viewpoint, what has STARHUB, the I.S.P., got to do with his present plight and predicament as a FINANCIALLY destitute writer/blogger?
5. Perhaps this is the truth: Had he been able -- intelligently, ardently, ingeniously, bravely, honestly, eloquently, confidently, learnedly, sensitively, critically and thoughtfully -- to use the I.S.P.'s useful and "vitalistic" services all these years, he might have become, probably, "terminally ill"! [Or, immensely happy, satisfied and very successful -- especially sexually -- as a man, human being, citizen and writer (of serious, quality essays and books)!]
6. On our way to our destination, we'll make many stop-overs and detours; yet, we'll still arrive there! That's how confident and resourceful we are!
7. We have many supporters and defenders, friends ands admirers, interested helpers and aggrieved, victimised citizens!

We'll always attempt to DISRUPT -- yes!, ABRUPTLY -- their (method of) operation and control, which is to influence our mind in every way possible (and in their favour!) -- by employing all kinds of effective gadgets, equioment, devices and inventions -- in order to suddenly shock, stun, surprise and alarm them!

Do You Really -- Truly and Sincerely -- CARE, SHARE AND BOND (With Those You Serve?)

PLEASE REFER TO YOUR REPLY, on 14.11.08 (Case Ref: 010657/03), to my humble application for FINANCIAL assistance from the Singapore Government -- through your highly esteemed social welfare agency.

Your response to my need for FINANCIAL assistance is to offer me, yes!, Food Vouchers for 3 months (worth S$30.00 per month)! How totally pathetic! What is your understanding of my situation? What compassion is shown by the authority? Let me tell you -- clearly, loudly, distinctly and logically : I WILL collect my entitlement of Food Vouchers from your NWCDC -- and still remain fully aggrieved and angered by your refusal to help me FINANCIALLY -- but instead, to give me such a miserable token "gift" from your immense wealth and high salary?


Are these Singapore Government officers trying to placate me with such token small gestures of "assistance" and "support" -- knowing all-too-well about my FEW needs and their easily-satisfied nature? Are they trying, for the satisfaction of witnessing my humiliating concession to the Singapore Government, to exchange such placation for, to wit, my willingness to concede my rights to live my own life in my own way?


Such a lame, odious and ultimately infantile -- not to mention insulting and deceiving -- response from the authorities will only serve to harm the PAP's next re-election campaign, when it will, once again, seek to win even more electoral votes from even more constituents in the next General Elections. It will be the most crucial and important GE among them all -- in our short national history! (Don't worry, the preparations of the Opposition Parties this time -- right from the very beginning, involving the selection and nomination of contesting candidates -- will NOT be like the kind of afore-said response which the PAP Government and its surveillance officers have given me so far -- in responding, precisely, to my attempt to seek FINANCIAL help to extend my ability to live a dignified and self-respecting and hopefully long life.


I'm a very lonely man and citizen (despite having numerous contacts, every day, with people from all walks of life -- regardless of age, sex, race, language, education, religion, and nationality -- in the course of my work as a writer).

And I'm being constantly harassed and derided by the Singapore Government's surveillance officers, who have driven me to a "loony" state of FINANCIAL destitution -- and blaming me for such a personal crisis by claiming that my regular patronization of prostitutes (yes, but how many a month, in the first place?) is the cause of my FINANCIAL problem! But do I have to apologize for my attempts, as a still healthy 55-year-old man -- in spite of suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol (whose regular treatment by polyclinic doctors HAVE SO FAR absorbed a substantial amount of my limited FINANCIAL resources) -- to satisfy my sexual needs?


Honourable men and women, I am still a single, a man -- a physically strong bachelor -- at the age of 55 -- a Senior Citizen no less, and I have the right to patronize the services of prostitutes -- even with my limited FINANCIAL resources!

I've already withdrawn, upon reaching the age of 55 this July, a sum of more than S$3,000.00 from the Special Account of my CPF -- there is no more money left in my Ordinary Account . I've already used part of it to pay for my outstanding and current HDB loan instalment -- and about most of the remaining money to buy a Personal Computer (ACER Brand) on 5.8.08 -- to help me in my work as a writer. This PC, however, had already been sold recently, in order for me to pay my outstanding bills.


As I've sold my PC (at a really great loss!), I'd to terminate my internet service account, run by STARHUB, which then billed me an additional sum of $400.oo (for early termination of service -- agreed upon in our contract) -- to bring my current debt to STARHUB to more than $660.00! (And that for just a few weeks of usage of my PC!)


I've also sold the 2 Nokia handphones that I'd bought this year , on two separate occasions (0n 21.6.08 and on 30.9.08), to facilitate my communication with publishers. Both handphones had since been sold, again on two separate occasions (on 12.9.08 and on 18.11.08), unwillingly and desperately, to help me buy essential food items for my daily consumption.

My DEPENDANTS PROTECTION SCHEME policy will soon be terminated if I can't renew it by paying, in full, the annual premium of $260.00 to the insurer, NTUC Income.


I had to sell off my entire vast collection of my treasured CDs and DVDs -- in order to pay for my monthly bills.

I've even contemplated selling my only portable radio receiver left in my sparsely-furnished flat, which would truly deny me the opportunity to listen to my favourite BBC news and current affairs programmes (the only source of information about the world for me now, since I've long stopped buying the local dailies for both financial and political reasons).

As a Senior Citizen, I'm, however, unable even to enjoy the special movie-going concession of paying only $4.00 flor a ticket to watch a movie at the local cinema.

On another related but seemingly insignificant matter: Why can't I, a Senior Citizen at the official age of 55 (plus a few months) who, to at least the kind operators of local cinemas, can enjoy a cinema show for S$4.00, be also allowed to qualify for the similar use of concessionary tickets when travelling on our buses and MRT trains? Why can't the bus transport operators and the MRT auhorities follow the same age ruling or requirement for consideration as a Senior Citizen -- at age 55 instead 0f 60! -- to be allowed, yes, as an officially-declared Senior Citizen, to travel on our buses and MRT trains?


I've also considered selling off my 3-room HDB flat in an eventuality -- so as to solve all my FINANCIAL problems, caused primarily by my inability to service, fully and regularly, my monthly instalment payments (whose settlement every month is needed in order for me to repay, progressively, the entire loan given to me by the HDB, upon my purchase of my flat in 1997).

Publishers have also been rejecting my writings for publication as books, for fear of offending the authorities with their support, business-wise or commercially speaking, for my sensitive and provocative socio-political writings. How am I supposed to earn a living as a writer then?

My siblings have also stopped helping me FINANCIALLY. Without their monthly contributions to my monthly "income", I have only my loyal tenants to rely on, FINANCIALLY, for sustaining my livelihood. (My tenants pay me S$400.00 every month for renting my bedroom. And that is the only source of my monthly income now.)

I've already reached the lowest point of my FINANCIAL situation: I'm so destitute that I'm forced to sell off all my valuable personal items or properties in order to have enough money to buy food daily. (Don't even mention my need to pay all those troubling and unsettling household bills.) And I've been wearing mostly the same old clothes for more than 10 years now. I'm also unable to contribute to charitable and religious organizations -- although I'd like to.


I was so downright poor at one time -- reaching a point in my life when I' had to seriously persuade myself -- rationally (in others words, against my personal convictions) -- that I'd need to to sell, illegally, pirated VCDs and CDs, in order to have any money to buy food for myself at all! (Was it how I should have lived, worked and played -- all through the last 36 years -- as a "model" or "good" citizen?)

There are no more grey areas left in my life now. All personal items which are deemed worth selling at all, and which I consider dispensable, have mostly been sold. That is how desperate -- and how economical -- I have become, yes, you fucking bastards from MSD, ISD, SPF and the power-hungry and affluent members of the PAP leadership! (There are certain aspects in my being and in my life, let me remind them, that I will never try to convert into cash! Do you hear me?)

As a poor and helpless writer, my most important problem is still, to re-emphasize once more, to settle my outstanding and current HDB bills (amounting to S$1,577.25). With this in mind, on 13.11.08 (Thur.), I approached and met, in person, Mr Tan Wee Liat (Tel: 63985934), Estate Officer in HDB Yishun Branch Office, and spoke to him for about half-an-hour (between 2.30 pm and 3.05 pm) about my inability to pay my outstanding and current HDB bills. I asked him to help prevent the possibility of my being heavily indebted, in the long term, to the HDB. Even now, my seemingly insignificant debt to the HDB has been troubling and de-stabilizing me for a long time now -- affecting negatively my work and my ability as a writer. (Such tight FINANCIAL situation had even forced me to pawn my precious gold pendant and gold chain -- given to me for remembrance by my late mother -- so as to allow me to pay, partially, my household bills and also for the purchase of food items and other groceries.)


But what can Mr Tan Wee Liat do?

What will he, with due respect to his authoritative and responsible position, do?

Surely, the highest authority in the land can show him some initiative and cooperativeness -- as a problem-solver -- by letting Mr TAN WEE LIAT do what he can possibly do (from a sense of my truly difficult plight)? Perhaps, and I am speaking as an uninformed citizen, Mr Tan can grant me a TEMPORARY REPRIEVE FROM PAYMENT OF MY OUTSTANDING AND CURRENT HDB BILLS (lasting for an initial period of 6 months -- and involving an amount of money every month which, had I been compelled to use it for the payment of my HDB bills, would have prevented me from better utilizing it for the payment of all my essential household expenses and basic needs (such as food) -- in order to help me achieve a long-enough period of mental repose and, hence, of intellectual fertility and vibrancy, so as to ensure greater success for me as a serious, quality writer (a writer whose ability to satisfy his basic needs is presently undermined by the surveillance authorities)?

After all, to succeed as a writer, whose work is time-consuming and extremely demanding -- of the utmost effort, application, concentration and mental energy, one needs to be more than hardworking and merely capable of writing grammatically and interestingly.


I used to maintain 2 different bank accounts and had several Fixed Deposits and also yearly subscriptions to savings and insurance schemes in my "better-off" adult working years, when for financial reasons, I had to, as an unsuccessful writer not earning any money at all, I was forced, reluctantly and unhappily, to work in other unrelated non-writing (and quite boring, unchallenging and even menial) occupations and jobs in order to survive -- in jobs such as factory production work; clerical work; sales work; cleaning work; contract renovation work; shop assistance work; security (guard) work; delivery work; and waiter's work.

But now, I've just about slightly more than one Singapore dollar left in my only (POSB) bank account. I also have many outstanding household bills to settle with the various authorities. With almost no cash -- yes, no MONEY -- in my possession, how am I going to even try budgeting my spending activities and plans? I don't have the economic freedom to pursue my own money-making opportunities -- in my own way as a "stubborn" and "loony" writer! (Stopping me from eating chickens regularly is not the solution to my problems, dear!)


Surely, our "good" and "able" Singapore Government is not totally heartless? Surely, it can't ignore my calls and pleas for FINANCIAL assistance -- as mounted by my personal presence at the NWCDC (located at Woodlands Civic Centre) on 2 occasions now [the first on 12.7.08, which turned into an official rejection of my application, as confirmed to me by Ms Chin Tong Mui, Deputy General Manager, in a letter on 7.8.08 (Case Ref: 10657/03); and the second (and latest occasion) on 28.10.08, when I duly presented many of my important personal and "public" documents, including printed copies of my relevant blog posts (http://afighterandalovertoo.blogspot.com/), to my interviewing officer -- a Malay woman by the name of Mazlaina -- for her own report and presentation to the higher authorities, so that they can refer to them and, of course, take urgent action or apply effective solution (after giving them their utmost attention)!


Unlike the first occasion, when I was interviewed by a seemingly concerned (and admittedly utterly charming) "socially working" executive officer -- with seemingly impeccable academic credentials and a listening ear, I was very emotionally charged and intellectually focused this time -- on my second appearance inside the NWCDC Interview Room -- where I pleaded for FINANCIAL assistance from the government by giving the equally attentive and genuinely concerned Senior Manager (a woman called Mazlaina), a comprehensive and honest account of my troubling plight and unsettling predicament as an oppositionist writer, working unsuccessfully to write and to publish my writings as books of collected essays. Mazlaina, after listening to my call for help, promised to refer my case to the senior authorities for further consideration and approval. I had, presumably then, managed to impress upon Mazlaina the SEVERITY and GRAVITY of my unenviable and de-stabilizing predicament.


I expect the highest authorities at the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) to show more initiative and co-operativeness -- and not merely a "careful" assessment of my situation (by just following the ministry's policy guidelines)! After all, there is indeed A CHANGE IN MY CIRCUMSTANCES AT THE PRESENT MOMENT -- VASTLY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE IN EXISTENCE AT THE TIME OF MY FIRST APPLICATION FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE!


Please do undertake genuine actions -- and thereby show serious, high-level and high-standard CONCERN for my plight and predicament as an unsuccessful writer who is unable to earn a living -- yes, to earn any income at all! -- in his role and capacity as a professionally serious and quality writer. It is a situation caused, in no small or insignificant manner, by the efforts and activities of the very same government surveillance officers who are spying and snooping on me, with their aim of controlling me and turning me into an obedient, uncritical, unthinking, apathetic and even cynical SUBJECT -- without any soul, heart, mind and (unviolated) body of his own -- without, yes, any INDIVIDUALITY of MY own!

To conclude, I demand a genuine -- not a cosmetic and temporary -- solution to my FINANCIAL predicament at the highest level -- from the highest authorities in the country -- and certainly not from some sorry pathetic, miserable and low-level "problem-solvers" like you, sorry Ms Teng -- a mere government functionary!

I want the Singapore Government to show more genuine understanding of the GRAVITY andf SEVERITY of my FINANCIAL situation -- as a poor, helpless and unfortunate writer under immense, constant and relentless pressure from the very same heartless government -- yes, from which I am trying, perhaps foolishly?, to seek FINANCIAL assistance (in order to alleviate, or better still, to resolve my FINANCIAL problems once and for all)!

Don't you realize the sheer IRONY -- is THAT the correct word? (you see? I have been suffering, and am still suffering, from 36 years of continuing interruptions, disruptions and corruptions of my language-using ability!) -- of IT all? I rest my case!

But I'm a man of rectitude. I'm a fearless individualist who believes I can make a difference to the world. To those who are on the right (and bright) side of history, I want them to realize this:

Through my incessant efforts as an uncompromising oppositionist (and now so-called "loony") writer, I'll light up the world; I'll lighten the load of those oppressed and victimized by the authorites; I'll light up their lives; I'll enlighten them; I'll be the light of their life; and, when lightning strikes (as it always will -- often unexpectedly too), I'll tell them not to take it lightly!

I had to terminate my Internet Account with the National Library Board just recently (because I was unable to pay for my usage of its services) -- although, as an industrious writer, I need to use the public library's PC daily in the course of my work.

3. Justice is ordinary, though not quite in the way that an unrepentant Western thought culture to be, because it is NOT latent or innate but needs to be decided by struggle and by irony too.

Cornered, cheated, exhausted and despondent -- under the relentless pressure mounted by the surveillance authorities, I have actually even considered emigrating, permanently, to the U.S. (the Mother of Democracy!) -- to, at last, set my proferssional ambition and aims, as a serious, quality writer, on a hopeful, rightful, meaningful and productive path!

MODERN HEROES AND HEROINES

NEED TO BE STUBBORN --

IF THEY WANT TO SUCCEED IN LIFE

There were few FAMOUS heroines in the world's long history. Philosphers, writers, poets, painters, architects, scientists, political leaders, industrialists, landowners, and a host of innumerable other professionals -- except probably the world's oldest (namely, prostitutes) -- were mostly men. Male heroes in the past could easily express themselves, with no social or political restrictions -- the strengths and uniqueness of their personalites and character, and the depth of their values, convictions and principles (including their loyalty to them) -- in significant and, on many occasions, influential works, efforts and endeavours. They had helped mankind to build -- and thus to travel along -- the necessary and vital roads to our common destination as human beings, living and working, as civilized men and women in more and more developed societies and polities: in other words, human progress and achievement.



In the 21st century, women have had come a long way indeed. There are now female intellectuals, politicians, engineers, technicians, scientists, managers, sports personalities, professors, academics, scholars, economists, computer analysts, computer programmers, investors, bankers, financiers, property agents, manufacturers, professional photographers, and many others who represent the undeniable progresses made by females in modern times -- through, especially, the availability 0f, and accessibility to, formal education in the schools, colleges, universities and other institutions of learning.



Such progresses in female accomplishments and efforts are achieved by those fortunate women in societies which believe in the freedom and in the rights of their citizens to pursue their education -- up to the highest possible level. So now, in addition to those occupations, fields of endeavour and professions which, traditionally, were already open to the presence and practice of (then still unemancipated) women in their ranks, back in the stupid old days -- yes, long before female emancipation and the women's liberation movement (and what has been called feminism), there are numerous examples of both women and men who are able to benefit from their many years of formal and institutional education and training -- with highly lucrative results and attractive material returns -- and also, yes, with the enviable experience of feeling a great or strong sense of personal achievement, advancement and immense satisfaction. Also, and perhaps most importantly, these women and men are able to feel proud about their contributions to the betterment of society -- and of the world, and of mankind at large.



These are our modern-day heroes and heroines -- and we need them, even in this era of postmodernism, globalization, biopolitics and the advent of modern electronic/electrical surveillance techniques, technologies and activities.



My Own Personal Misgivings, Doubts and Apprehensions --

Readers of my blog posts so far have already learnt how I view and regard such key and significant developments in human history. To put it simply, I view and regard them with repugnance and deep horror. I cannot reconcile the world I grew up in -- a world in which there were no deliberate attempts by important leaders of society and politics and industry to celebrate the so-called "virtues" of ambiguities, inconsistencies, illogicallities, ambivalences, contradictions, relativism and anti-idealism as the dominant "realities" of our modern time.



I have questioned and challenged their versions of what philosophers, throughout history, had always been in single-minded pursuit of -- namely, the TRUTH. And this is what is troubling and disturbing me: in each and every discipline that men (and now women) have been studying --be it philosphy, history, psychology, political philosophy (or political science, as it has come to be studied as nowadays), literature, the arts, public administration, sports and games, government, etc. -- there is a drastic transformation in the nature and methods in which such disciplines used to be associated and identified with. It has really turned my intellectual life -- and my world -- upside down (initially, for the majority of the past 36years , when I almost knew nothing in an effective and vital sense, and only recently, during the past few months, when I, finally and gradually, was allowed by the surveillance authorities to discover and to realise the enormity and magnitude of the not-quite-beneficial changes in my life -- as a man, human being, citizen and writer -- an unpleasant and totally unacceptable situation caused by my being unreluctantly and illegally "implanted" by the MINDEF authorities in SAFTI in the year 1972, more than 36 years ago).



What exactly are my grievances and so-called "complaints"? And what are my priorities now? It is very basic. To put it simply, I cannot remain fully and positively and fruitfully alive and still believe that my countless intellectual mentors from the West -- the great thinkers and writers who had produced innumerable timeless classics of so many diverse intellectual, moral and artistic persuasions and contents -- yes, I cannot simply and unquestioningly believe -- let alone accept -- that these great mentors of mine (my all-time HEROES and, yes, occasionally, HEROINES ) are now totally redundant, effete, irrelevant and hopelessly out-of-tune with, and out-of-place in, the so-called "realities" -- political, economic, social, cultural and scientific -- in these contemporary times, in a world that has vastly changed, almost beyond my recognition, from the world I grew up, back in the 1960s!



Unfortunately, I stand almost alone (and this long-held belief in my own isolation -- as practically demonstrated in my solitary life-style and "anti-social" behaviour during the past 36 years and more! -- as well as my publicly witnessed "weirdness" and "bizarreness" -- is itself an indication of the plight and predicament I was put in (and still am in now) -- as a result of having my intellectual faculties, especially, undermined and tampered with by the ubiquitous surveillance authorities in Singapore, since the year 1972!



So, I have to conclude (and this is my main concern now -- yes, my priority!): We still need heroes and heroines -- but they must include those men and women who, in this era of postmodernism, globalization, biopolitics and governmental mass surveillance, nevertheless still believe in the values, principles and insights provided by those heroic and unique authors in the Western intellectual and humanistic traditions.



Unless there are enough women and men who share and hold such traditional, timeless and classic modernist and even pre-modernist attitudes and ideas, there will be no place for oppositionists and individualists like me, not even to hide myself -- let alone earn a living as a professional writer! Yes, perhaps then, I should go up to the high mountains and live out the rest of my life as a recluse!

Those of us who are harshly and reluctantly entrapped in the system of political control undertaken by our elected government -- through its employment of modern surveillance techniques and technologies --often try to escape from its ensnaring and suffocating restrictions by thinking in terms of fighting the authorities through legal means -- namely, by employing, certainly foolishly, the official services of our compromised and beholden Members of Parliament (elected lawmakers), and by making use of the professional services of our timid and equally compromised lawyers (trained specifically to understand the intricacies -- and also vulnerabilities -- of governmental actions responding to, and confronting the challenges and criticisms posed by opponents and critics of the government, with reference to universal principles of human rights and to international laws and regulations guiding precisely such governmental actions and behaviour).

Such official methods of legal recourse, admittedly, may prevent some of the worst excesses of a surveillance society, but such solutions also DO NOT WORK if THE POLITICAL WILL TO IMPLEMENT SUCH SOLUTIONS -- EFFECTIVELY AND NOT JUST COSMETICALLY -- IS NOT PRESENT.

Without detailed public knowledge of surveillance techniques and technologies, and of the EXTENT to which they are being deployed, the groundswell of public opinion necessary to drive a DEMAND for such solutions will remain lacking.

The main concern of dissident bloggers like me, who write outside of the intellectual and political (and "systematic") confines set by mainstream snoopers and manipulators of targetted victims in our surveillance society here, is to learn as much as we can about (and to reveal bravely and publicly about the results of such learning) the AMOUNT and EXTENT of data (not data collection itself) that are being collected by the authorities and their COLLATION within ever-more-massive databases!

Question: What are the safeguards (will they be observed and followed in the first place?), should our society ever demand them, to ensure privacy principles are respected and to allay other important privacy concerns? Thus, citizens who are dissident bloggers like me, have a real concern, and it is about widespread INSTITUTIONAL surveillance of individuals and/or groups in a society!

Such massive surveillance efforts by the government is the result of The Party's desire to collate and form national databases -- and this is extremely disturbing.

The system of "due process of law" is long embodied in the laws of the United Kingdom, the United States of America and Canada (and in the systems of jurisprudence derived from them). Such a system is relied upon by most citizen-victims of governmental surveillance to protest against such humiliating and oppressive forms of control over their lives -- including their moments of privacy.

That is the reason why non-mainstream bloggers and political critics resort to other (shall we say, un-systematic?) forms or methods of countering the restrictive or constraining influences from the ubiquitous surveillance officers who, normally, with an unknowing, unknowledgeable and unaware -- and hence supine and acquiescent -- citizenry at their feet, will exploit their advantages (in terms of logistics, finances, and knowledge and information -- based precisely on the formation of national databases, etc.) and also their awesome, comprehensive legal and juridical powers, to subjugate and suppress the controlled population (although they would never admit to doing so openly!).

Dissident bloggers like me have this part of a bigger picture of covert control over the population by stealthy and manipulative surveillance officers in mind when we blog or write about corporate or governmental snooping and manipulation (which are never discussed or covered here -- and also never denied either -- by journalists, editors and commentators in the obsequious local mass media).

As Mark Weiser, Chief Technologist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre (PARC), said (in 1991), on the danger of an ubiquitous technological environment:

"The most profound technologies are those that disappear. They weave themselves into the fabric of everyday life until they are indistinguishable from it."

I had foolishly gone AWOL from my company, based at Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute, where I was undergoing three months of infantry Section Leader training, sometime in early 1972. After a few days of wandering about, I returned to camp eventually and was quickly warded at the Medical Centre in SAFTI for observation.

I was an unobtrusive and quiet patient in the ward, while undergoing daily medical examination by the medical doctors there and also by the psychiatrists at a Government clinic at Maxwell Road, where I was referred to for specialist observation.

During the time I was resting as a patient in the Medical Centre, something serious and grave -- oh, Heavens! -- happened to me, which was to set the course of my future from then onwards. But what exactly did take place there and then?

This is a question of major importance to my life now and it has serious implications for my future as a writer. I've been waiting, since 1972, for this moment of truth-telling! This revelation of my actual status as a man, human being, citizen and writer -- with its purported role of an "implantee" (or agent or employee of the Singapore Government) will illuminate the rest of my life -- and allow me to see clearly ahead, on my road to professional success as a writer -- in Singapore, no less!

I will launch attack after attack -- against the Singapore Government for damaging my life -- with, especially, regard to my sexual needs -- and I will hold them responsible for any failure of mine now as a man trying to live out a normal life for the rest of my existence on this earth.

All I know is that I can remember many events, episodes and activities that I have had experienced during the last 36 years of my life -- as a "schizophrenic", a "molester", a "thief", a "violent" or "aggressive" man, a "PAP agent", a production worker, a low-level and humble clerk, a "mole", a "spy" -- yes, in other words, as a "government employee" acting in all these roles, guises and capacities which are all totally unsuited to my character, my personality, my values and principles, and my goals and real interests as a man, human being, citizen and aspiring writer!

The time for continuing to launch my anti-government sarcastic responses remains! My memory tells me if I am to embark on a serious and purposeful future course of action, I must attack the Singapore Government from now onwards. And I have been trying my best to do so -- except, on certain occasions, when, for some clear reasons -- moments of idiocy and imbecility -- under uninvited provocation!

I want to stress the gravity of the Singapore Government's mistake in "implanting" me, unofficially and without my consent or permission, in 1972 -- an act which was to result, for many years now, in its constant and conscious attempt and and effort -- by using the instruments of ministerial and state powers (the government,law, the police, etc.) to undermine my eventual (contemplated) success as a serious, quality writer unde (of published books -- and essays in important magazines)!

Today is the day for the Singapore Government to recognize and acknowledge, as the lawfully but unfairly elected rulers of Singapore, the upmost severity of my problematic situation. I have to regard myself as a case of Human Rights Abuses by the Singapore Government -- should this elected Democratic Government in Singapore fail to grant me my right to work as a professional writer.

I am not out to fix the government of Singapore -- no, not in any sense of the word. I am honestly trying to resolve my extremely difficult problem and my complicated present situation. Nobody up to now understands my problem, my situation, my predicament, my plight -- including my own cherished family members!

The choice is clear: Either the Singapore Government acts decisively on this vital matter of mine or it will have to answer to History.


Addendum:

All my revelations and exposure about surveillance officers and their activities are not aimed at undermining the Singapore Government's clear understanding of the issue at hand. I just want to EXPRESS myself -- my awareness, my knowledge, my knowingness -- after, especially, being for so long almost totally ignorant of what is crucially going on or taking place -- as a life-changing and life-affecting vital issue -- in this small country of my own and in the larger world too!

Let me declare that I regard the Singapore Government as entirely responsible for any failure of mine to work as a published professional writer (and to live with dignity and self-respect) -- and for any supposedly accummulated "debt" (of whatever kind) which it owed me (and for whose payment it has yet to make concretely and practically, in no uncertain or miniscule terms)! Does it still insist that it does not have any debt -- of whatever kind -- which it still owes me? [Had I not lost, missed, wasted and sacrificed so much? And had I not earned anything at all -- not even some monetary remuneration and even compensation, yes! -- for all my intellectual, moral, artistic and even physical efforts during these past 36 years of living as a reluctant and, sometimes, unhappy "implantee"? I just don't want to work, whether officially or unofficially, secretly or otherwise (except for a brief period at MSD in the days of long ago!), as a member of the governmental surveillance authorities -- be it as an intelligence or security officer or in any capacity or role. I am just INCOMPATIBLE with Government service!]

This is what is TROUBLING and PUZZLING to me -- as a rational man with some compassion of no small measure: How could anyone force me to work in any capacity or role or guise that I have absolutely neither the interest nor the qualities or the abilities to perform in -- to my own satisfaction and self-respect?

And I'm not going to join a political party just to reward the loyalty of activists -- former or current ones! I do want to serve the people, but only as a writer and not a a practising politician! But firstly, I must, after all these hopeless and miserable years, serve myself -- yes!, my own needs and goals!

I believe a great number of Singa0poreans are suffering from a disaffected relationship with and attitude towards the Singapore government! Andf they mustbe, this coming General Election, allowed tom express such disaffection at the ballot box. This is a cornerstone of true and genuine -- not cosmetic -- democracy! (And certainly, I am not going to be in politics to enrich myself or to exercise autocratic powers!) And I don't believe in Western conspiracies! Some leaders aremore interested in, or concerned with, Western bullying -- in the form of conspiracies, for instance, which they claim these Western powers are (or which they accuse them of) trying to use to undermine their positions in the political and social order (or themselves!) -- than in how they TREAT their OWN PEOPLE!

That grave mistake in "implanting" me was not accidental. I am very sure of that! It was a deliberate and calculated attempt to exploit my weaknesses and defects in order to serve an outcome which all members of the top brass in SAFTI at that time were keen to establish in their lives and which was based on a decision undertaken by the military top brass with such unforgivable lightness of consideration and with such unbearable lack of awareness of its severe implications to my own life and future -- should the outcome ever turn into a disastrous mishandling of my case and an unpardonable mistreatment of myself as a medical patient warded at a medical centre for simple medical observation and perhaps even professional treatment by qualified medical practitioners -- yes, for an admittedly rash and foolish act which, nonetheless, merely expressed my youthful idealism and naivete in those days.

But why, oh why? And why the cover-up all these years?

Was there ever such an example of total INEPTITUDE by members of what is publicly promoted and claimed as a supposedly "good" and "able" government? And are they really and truly interested in a GENUINE transfer of power -- and not in a cosmetic one? Is it going to be an admirable exercise in statesmanship? OR IS IT JUST A MATTER OF SIMPLY LOSING TOTAL CONTROL? WILL THE TRANSFER RESULT IN INCESTUOUS PARTITIONS OR DIVISIONS --AND THEN IN SHAMBLES? TRULY, IT WILL BE AN IGNOMINOUS END TO SO MANY YEARS OF "HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL" RULE -- ALBEIT A RULE BASED MOSTLY ON BLUFF! -- AND ALSO DAMN INSULTING THREATS AND TYPICALLY ABUSIVE AND CRUEL ACTIONS!

Personal Testimony of A Citizen and Witness :

My Private and Public Life Has Been Turned Upside Down by the PAP Government. It Uses Images and Voices From People I Know Closely (Or Am Familiar or Acquainted With -- Such As Family Members, Friends, Ex-colleagues and Ex-classmates and Relatives) -- In Order To Control and Turn Me Into, By Turns An Enforcement/Security Agent and By Others An Obedient Subject. I Have Become One, After More Than 36 Years As A Reluctant, Poor, Unfortunate and Helpless (and Sexually Frustrated and Deprived -- Not to Mention Socially Unhappy and Love-starved) Victim of Governmental Manipulation and Control. These Surveillance Officers All Try To Exert Maximum Control Over My Own Mind, Heart, Soul and Body -- With the Practised Cunning, Determined Intention and Long-term Plan (For Such Implementation of the Deliberate Use of Often Illogical and Misleading Words, Images, Messages, Suggestions, Hints and Many Other Tricks and Methods of Communication -- Including, Quite Often, Downright Abusive Verbal Communication Techniques)!


Yes, instead of presenting and identifying themselves -- seriously, openly and clearly -- in order to respectfully and honestly make their own intentions known, and to express their own needs and desires, these surveillance officers (both male and female, whether separately and individually or as a combined unit), just contribute to my perturbation as a man, human being, citizen and writer!

Yes, these human monitors, censors, spies, agents, snoopers and controllers -- with the help of the latest and the most advanced scientific equipment and technological inventions and electronic/electrical products -- have been, day-in and day-out, second-after-second, minute-after-minute, hour-after-hour, day-after-day, week-after-week, month-after-month, year-afer-year, WORKING (real hard indeed!) to disturb me!

They have been insulting me -- my intelligence and my respect for myself; they have been controlling me -- to hide their own inadequacies and hang-ups. They have been expressing their grievances and complaints; they have been humiliating me -- while I am taking a shower, changing clothes, urinating, shitting, masturbating, and fucking women (and there were, and will still be, plenty of such women in my life as a resistant and dissident citizen)! They have been issuing "challenges" to me, knowingly or not; they have been pretending to be what they are not (and never will be!); they want to impress upon me that they are likely "winners", that they can achieve victories (moral?, intellectual?, what else?), that they can obtain "permanent" (sexual, especially) satisfasction, enjoyment, pleasure and success!

These surveillance officers (men and women) want to please themselves (in so many different ways that are -- secretively or not -- best known only to themselves); they want to react or to respond (to my expressions and self-expressions); yes, they want to ejaculate (how many times per week?); to avenge their "sufferings" (caused by me?) -- by making me suffer in turn. They want to avenge Lee Kuan Yew's humiliation under my deliberate, insulting and provocative verbal dismissiveness; and to avenge themselves on me -- their long-time (but long-suffering) nemesis! They want to punish me for daring to insult their modesty, saintliness, prudery, prudishness, holiness, religiousity, purity, perfection, infallibility, uprightness, goodness, ability and everything worth their while to mention (in support of their "feel-good" factor: yes, to feel "good", "able", etc., etc., etc.).

But, dear fellow citizens and readers, these surveillance officers NEVER want to admit to their own mistakes; they NEVER want to -- thus and accordingly -- CORRECT or REMEDY their own grave mistakes!

Instead, they choose to EXPLOIT such mistakes of theirs -- committed from the highest level of governmental authority to the lowest level of official subordination -- and turn them to their own advantage (and to gain farther advantages of whatever kinds) -- ALL IN THEIR OWN FAVOUR!

Finally, a word of reminder to these conformists who lack (STRONG) minds of their own: How can they continue to insult me, repeatedly -- and to "take me on" in things or subjects which I CAN commandeer? (and, further, in areas where I am the absolute and undeniable MASTER and COMMANDER -- the COMMANDANT, in effect?)!

I am a self-confident blogger, dissident, writer, manly lover, and, unarguably, a unique and original human being. I, namely: David Chua Chuan Seah, can never be "helped" to "enjoy" myself by these surveillance officers when their only motive for such "help" is to APPEASE their own guilt-ridden complex! For, as a writer, I must be asked (and be FULLY respected for my sincere and honest reply) : What are my own intentions? Are they noble and magnanimous? Or debased, degrading and abusive?

AND THIS IS MY REPLY : It is time for these surveillance officers to find out whether or not I am a liar (a pathological one?), a "mental defective", a "psychopath", or ... (what else?, you idiots!).

ADDENDUM:

This is my request: Do not exploit my weaknesses (e.g. for women and girls), including my soft-heartedness, my obsession with good hygiene, comfort, my meticulousness, my confidence, my resourcefulness, my urge to get close to women and girls (again!, but why not? : what, really or exactly, can I do, Sir?).

Please do not take advantage of my ignorance about many scientific facts, matters, inventions and technological advances -- whose knowledge or awareness of many people simply take for granted.

Please do not exploit my "stubborness"; please do not abuse my humility. Please do not corrupt and contaminate my precious thoughts (which are many indeed!) and also my few, perhaps too few indeed -- but nonetheless sensitive (sometimes very much so !) feelings!

In Singapore, massive surveillance efforts, practices, planning and activities carried out by the MSD/ISD officers have replaced almost all forms of police enforcement work!

A man surely needs a WILLING maid -- for the satisfaction of his sexual NEEDS and social WANTS. Why, then, are the MSD/ISD officers preventing me from satisfying my sexual NEEDS and social WANTS by stopping me from meeting AND PHYSICALLY CONTACTING women who are NOT prostitutes?

Do MSD/ISD officers hold that a man is guilty until proven innocent? Why do they, for instance, assume that I am guilty of "immoral" behaviour (MOSTLY by patronizing prostitutes?!) without having ever proved that I am indeed so? AND on what grounds, may I ask precisely, am I "immoral"?

MSD and ISD officers have breached principles of privacy which are lawfully protected elsewhere in the world.

What is "surveillance" but another name for spying? To watch individuals covertly, to film them, to listen in to their conversations or communications, to know where they are at any given moment, to amass data on every aspect of their lifestyles -- this, surely, is precisely what a spy is paid to do! And this is exactly what our government and large corporations are doing, and attempting to do, to every individual in this nation!

However, it is worth contemplating a single question: What is the difference between "surveillance" and "spying"?

In Singapore, all Internet Service Providers are operated by government-controlled or related organizations;

Article 17, U.N. International Covenant On Civil and Political Rights, Ratified by the General Assembly (and the U.S.) in 1984:

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary or unlawful interference with his privacy, family, home, or correspondence, nor to unlawful attacks on his honor and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

Progressive U.S. Domestic and Foreign Policies

U.S. President George Bush is, by common consent, the worst president in the history of the American Presidency. And his presidency has, to me at least, lasted too long. It had been a long campaign for both the two major political parties in the Unites States. U.S. Senator John McCain had tried hard to win the American voters over to his side. But now, there is a new begining, at this early stage in the 21st Century, for the United States and the world : racism, class-based politics and unilateralism have been happily defeated in the U.S. for the first time!

It was a momentous occasion in the U.S. for many proud, loyal and confident Americans of diverse political beliefs. With their different respective definitions and, understandably, often mutually opposing concepts, of "democracy", Americans are totally free to cast their votes, absolutely unhindered, for any candidate that they choose to support. On Election Day (4.11.2008), the glory and magnificence of American democracy was eagerly observed by leaders and citizens from all over the world. Not unexpectedly, there was to be no surprise for the carefully and intelligently observing followers of the latest news reports provided by the media on the General Election -- based on results of initial polls.

It turned into a historical victory for democracy -- and for Senator Barack Obama -- on the next day (5.11.2008), when the final results were known and announced to the whole world. Yes, Mr Obama is the first Afro-American Democrat to be voted by millions and millions of Americans (from both sides of the political divide) into power in the U.S.! (Thanks, Americans! God bless America!)

As the most important and influential new/next man in the White House, President-elect Barack Obama, a progressive/liberal political leader, will be gracefully and peacefully inaugurated at noon on a bright day on 20.1.09 -- as the 44th President of the United States of America!

People, not only in America, but also all over the world, are full of positive feelings and high expectations after Mr Obama's break-through victory -- and also, just as important, after the high gains made by the Democrats in the U.S. Senate.

President-elect Barack Obama is wise, charismatic, strong, thoughtful and -- for the first time in a long, long while -- genuinely full of goodwill towards all men and women, regardless of nationality, race, language, religion, gender and other related or key differences among humankind.
In particular, Mr. Barack Obama's working-class-hero background inspires many people. All it takes is for someone like Obama -- a leader whom many Americans has placed their trust in -- to enhance their life and to improve their lives.

But after the euphoria is over, a sharp sense of reality will set in: the U.S. economy is still in a mess -- a sad conservative legacy from the current leader George Bush. The date 5.11.2008 may be a time for U.S. citizens to remember -- as a time for substantial and real change (especially in the continuing struggle for human rights) -- but no political system (not even the well-established and highly-influential one in the U.S.) can change and improve the life and lifestyle of the voters (both inside the U.S. and in the entire world) in an effective, innovative and creative way -- unless there are leaders who inspire hope with their progressive policies, domestically and in foreign relations.

There will first be a transition period of 77 days (11 weeks) for U.S. President George Bush to graciously and smoothly (and perhaps gratefully?) hand over the American leadership to his new/next successor Barack Obama -- a period in which many fine points of political contentions and contentiousness will be expectedly thrashed out and discussed seriously at the highest level of political discourse. For instance, they should help each other to find a hopefully conclusive and, perhaps, possibly -- idealistically? -- non-violent solution to the difficult problem of getting out of Iraq and, instead, of staying on in Afghanistan -- in the continuing fight against genuine and real -- and not manufactured or concocted -- terrorism (conducted by, especially, religious extremists)!

And when President-elect Barack Obama eventually assumes the official role as the leader, not only of the U.S. but also of the world, he would still have to face the problems posed by threats to fundamental freedoms and rights belonging to citizens in the U.S. and to all those helpless victimized people all over the world. Mr Obama, with all his undeniable qualities, skills, experiences and knowledge, will still need a lot of luck to prove his ability as an effective, responsible and competent (especially economically) leader of the U.S. -- the Mother of Democracy.

Mr Obama, from my personal perspective and understanding of current political and economic issues, must be emphatically pro-freedom, pro-equality, pro-creativity, pro-inspiration and, most important of all, decidedly and decisively anti-dishonesty!

In foreign policies, as an Afro-American, he would be expectedly pro-Africa. And Africans need such a man, human being and American political leader like him!

Martin Luther King, Jr., the great Afro-American leader and intense champion of human and civil rights, was a perseverant political activist who dared to dream openly and publicly -- of freedom, equality and peace for all mankind. But he was not the only one then -- and he inspired the only one among Afro-Americans now who can effect political change, creatively and innovatively, in the U.S. (and in other democracies of the world).

May future President Obama intelligently and carefully delegate his authority and power to those among his subordinates and supporters -- the senators and congressmen, the appointed officials and paid civil servants, and other lower-ranking officers who are inspired and motivated enough by Obama's leadership qualities -- so that they can serve as strong bridges to link up strongly all the people of the world, beyond the constraints of blood ties, racial origins, country of residence, political or religious beliefs -- and be they winners or losers in the game of life -- and allow them, freely, autonomously and independently, to journey, each and everyone of them, in his or her own way, on his or her respective path, to the common destination of FREEDOM, GROWTH and PEACE for ALL!

There are many amongst us in this world who cry out -- openly and actively, or silently and privately (in this conflict-laden world of postmodernism and globalization, and of human greed and ineptitude displayed by covert surveillance authorities in governments all over the world) -- and this is not a secret at all! -- against the oppression, suppression and repression by many so-called realistic, pragmatic, Machiavellian and, surprisingly (!), "democratic" governments and regimes in the world.

Let us then dare to change -- by first dreaming! Now!
